What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions in the world. It affects millions of people across the globe and is both chronic and serious. It affects joints and bones within the body. There are over 100 different types of arthritis known to doctors and the general categories within this number are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis. Each different type of arthritis needs its own treatment course.

Before committing a patient to a course of treatment a proper diagnosis must be made in order to identify which type of arthritis a person has. This just reinforces the point of how important it is to contact your doctor at the first sign of arthritis symptoms developing within your body. A swift diagnosis and assessment should be made as soon as possible.

When left untreated, arthritis can develop into a soreness around the affected area which results in swelling and can even be potentially dangerous.

Arthritis Treatment

After your diagnosis, your doctor can start you on your course of specific arthritis treatment. Treatment is taken in stages for the condition and the first stage is the mildest, usually consisting of topical remedies such as over-the-counter gels and creams. These work by being applied directly to the affected area and stimulating either a warming or tingling sensation in the joint which takes the patient's attention from the pain of the arthritis.

If this does not work however, the second stage is considered. The second stage is a course of arthritis medication prescribed by a doctor, which is often more effective for more serious pain relief. You could be prescribed either one drug or a combination of drugs from the following types: disease modifying drugs, anti-TNFs, painkillers or steroids.

The most widely used form of prescription drugs are painkillers. They are available in varying degrees of strength.

Despite the type of arthritis treatment that is recommended to you, it is of great importance that you keep in regular contact with your doctor and inform them of any changes as soon as they happen with your condition. This allows your doctor to take further steps as soon as it is necessary.
