Vitamin D – The Forgotten Vitamin

It seems that we have been hearing a lot about the importance of Vitamin C, the B Vitamins, and even Vitamin E, but what about Vitamin D?

It seems that we have been hearing a lot about the importance of Vitamin C, the B Vitamins, and even Vitamin E, but what about Vitamin D? Most people probably can’t even tell you where Vitamin D comes from, let alone what role it plays in the human body. Of course, each and every essential vitamin and mineral is important, but at the same time we cannot take any of them for granted. Vitamin D is one of those that have been left off the radar.

It might be because Vitamin D is made within the human body and is rarely found in food products, but I’m betting that the reason most people don’t hear about Vitamin D deficiency is because it just doesn’t happen that often. However, when it does occur it is a serious situation that needs to be handled with extreme caution.

Vitamin D is actually shown to reduce the risk factor for many types of cancers, including ovarian, colon, breast, and prostate cancer. It is important for strengthening the immune system and keeping your bones strong too. Lastly, Vitamin D has been shown to help your body fight autoimmune conditions in which your body would attack itself. Some of these conditions are Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes Type 1, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Vitamin D is actually created by the body as a result of sunlight exposure, which is part of the problem. We’ve heard a lot of evidence that too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, which means that just getting 15 minutes of sun per day might be enough. Vitamin D is also found in some food products, although the amount is negligible at best. You’d have to drink 10 glasses of milk per day to get the daily recommend dose of Vitamin D, which is not only hard to do, but also expensive.

Vitamin D can also be found in some meat and dairy products, but overall there are not many foods that contain Vitamin D.  If you find that you rarely spend time in the sun, then you might have a Vitamin D deficiency. In this case, you might want to look into a Vitamin D supplement to help you get your daily recommended dose. You could try getting into a tanning salon that has UVB lamps, but sometimes those can be hard to find. A pill is also much cheaper than a monthly payment to a tanning salon.

Although each and every vitamin plays a vital role in the overall health of the human body, Vitamin D is one that is often forgotten until it is too late. In order to keep your immune system strong and able, help you reduce risk of cancer, and to prevent autoimmune conditions, it is essential that you get your daily recommended dose of Vitamin D. If you can’t get it in the sun, you might as well find another way, such as a pill or supplement. Your health depends on it.
