In 1991 Lindsay A. Rosenwald, M.D., established ''Paramount BioCapital'' that, among other activities, has since been raising capital for the Paramount Capital Portfolio Companies. More than 40 starts up companies, including ''Cougar Biotechnology'', ''Bionovo Inc.'', ''ZIOPHARM Oncology'', ''INNOVIVE Pharmaceuticals'',''Novadel Pharma'', ''Tikvah Therapeutics, Inc.'', ''VioQuest Pharmaceuticals'', and many others have been created over the past 19 years.
Since its inception, Paramount BioCapital and its affiliate companies have been involved in the clinical development of more than 50 drug candidates, some of which have reached the market (including leukemia drug, Arsenic Trioxide, which progressed from IND to NDA in about 30 months — the fastest regulatory approval in FDA history; Sulodexide (KRX-101) for diabetic nephropathy licensed into ''Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc.''; milnacipran for fibromyalgia syndrome licensed from ''Pierre Fabre Medicament''; CH-1504 (MobileTrex) for rheumatoid arthritis licensed from University of South Alabama College Of Medicine by ''Chelsea Therapeutics''. Over 30 compounds still undergo clinical development today.
