Allopurinol or probenecid lower the levels of uric acid that you have in your blood, thus reducing the risk of another gout attack. They are only given to the gout patients that suffer from many gout flares or have kidney stones because of the uric acid. However, if the levels of uric acid are lowered too sudden, this may trigger a gout attack as well. To prevent this from happening, doctors also prescribe colchicine to gout patients who take drugs to lower the levels of acid. Furthermore, the therapy with acid- lowering drugs is not started when the patient is suffering from a gout attack.
