acid reflux disorder, being one complex disease, may be indicated by various symptoms which may fall under the more common and the not so common manifestations. The condition is mainly caused by a dysfunctional or weak lower esophageal sphincter which when functioning as it should, prevents the occurrence of stomach acid backflow. The reflux of acid will then cause damages or irritation to the esophagus, thus symptoms of the condition are manifested.
Known to be the more common group of acid reflux disorder or GERD symptoms, the esophageal manifestations are the more popular among the complaints of patients suffering from the disease.
. heartburn which is mostly considered as the chief symptom of heartburn, is indicated by the burning sensation spreading on the chest area. The inflammation caused by the acid reflux disorder to the esophagus may cause the heart to also feel inflamed due to the anatomical location of the organs, which is near each other.
. Regurgitation is a symptom caused by a more severe case of acid reflux disorder where the backflow of acid reaches as far as the throat and mouth.
. Dyspepsia or acid indigestion affects almost half of the population inflicted with acid reflux disorder. When having a case if dyspepsia, one may fell nauseous after a meal, discomfort or even pain felt in the upper abdomen, and a feeling of fullness in the stomach.
The disease may also be diagnosed through extraesophageal symptoms which are not common manifestations that the patient is suffering from GERD, some of which include:
. Cardiac pains and discomforts is an important symptom to take note of. It is vital that the patient knows the difference between the pains caused by acid reflux disorder from that of heart attack. This manifestation may be described as a feeling of seemingly having something choked behind the breastbone.
. ENT (ear, nose and throat) is group of area in the body where acid reflux disease may manifest itself through occurrences of such signs as hoarseness, chronic sore throat, ulcers, a feeling of having to constantly clear the throat, sinusitis, or laryngitis.
. Dysphagia is the medical term referring to the problems associated with swallowing. This may be a sign that the esophagus is experiencing spasms caused by the constriction caused by abnormalities or further damage to the esophageal lining.
. Pulmonary problems such as chronic cough, and symptoms of bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma or interstitial fibrosis are may also be indications that the person may be suffering from acid reflux disorder.
