There's no doubt about it, fish oils with a high levels of DHA can significantly reduce chronic inflammation, so how do they work and what's the best source?

Some inflammation is good and part of the body's natural defence system. This is caused by an infection which signals to the body to send white blood cells to attack the invader. The problem is that chronic inflammation doesn't go away and needs to be treated.

It is not only conditions like arthritis that fish oils can help with but inflammation in the body which has no symptoms and leads to heart attacks and strokes and is nicknamed the "silent killer"

It has always been known that fish oils containing high amounts of omega 3 fats like DHA and EPA can help with this but only recently have scientists discovered how.

The body converts the DHA omega 3 into a chemical called Resolvin D2 which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and this helps to treat potential heart problems as well as being effective for rheumatoid arthritis and other joint problems.

Of course this natural oil can help with many other health conditions like improving brain health, better vision, stronger immune system and lowering high cholesterol levels and many of these are down to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Trials have shown that people with chronic inflammation conditions like arthritis were able to lower or even come off their prescription meds when taking a daily fish oil supplement high in DHA fats, with less pain and increased mobility.

The key to getting these benefits is to select the very best oils from the many mediocre ones available as with any nutritional product on the market today there are good and bad ones and fish oil is no exception.

You will find that most contain more EPA as it is easier and cheaper to produce but it is essential to look for one with more DHA and at least 250mg in each capsule.

Purity will also play a part as you don't want to unwittingly ingest toxins like lead, arsenic and mercury and so molecularly distilled oil is best unless proven to be contaminant free. The Hoki fish from New Zealand is the only one currently that is pure and free from toxins.

To further help reduce chronic inflammation a blend of Hoki oil and distilled Tuna oil has shown to give over twice the anti-inflammatory benefits of standard ones.
