Arthritis means joint inflammation. The symptoms of arthritis may include pain, swelling, stiffness, tenderness and warmth in the area of joints. There are over a 100 types of arthritis with different causes.

The most common types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid and Gout. Osteoarthritis is caused by damage to the cartilage layer between joint bones that cause the bones to rub together and result in pain, swelling and inflammation. Rheumatoid is due to the body's immune system mistakenly attacking itself and causing the lining at the joints to swell. Gout happens when body cannot fully eliminate uric acid which is generated in the body as a by-product. This uric acid forms crystals in the joints and causes intense pain and swelling.

Causes of arthritis may include age, overuse or extra stress on weight bearing joints, obesity, genetic, hereditary, immunological or hormonal reasons, bacterial or viral infection and nutritional deficiencies among other things.

There are several treatment for arthritis. The various types of remedies are based on the type and exact cause of the arthritis. These are some types of the treatment for arthritis:

Medicinal arthritis treatment include following:

Pain relief medications: These include pain relief cream and / or drugs. They can help ease pain, stiffness and inflammation and has fewer side effects and therefore commonly used as initial arthritis treatment drug in cases of osteoarthritis. Acetaminophen and aspirin are examples of pain relief drugs and salycin, menthol, capsaicin and methyl salicylate are used in pain relief creams. Non steroid inflammatory drugs: Also known as NSAID, these drugs reduce inflammation but can have greater side effects like heartburn, stomach upset and pain. Examples of NSAID include Ibuprofen, indomethecian and nabumetone. Corticosteroids: These are primarily used in cases of rheumatoid arthritis treatment and reduce inflammation by reducing immune system activities. Cartilage Building drugs: These include flexeze fortify and when used over time naturally rebuild cartilage layer between joint bones. They are very useful in cases of osteoarthritis.

Beside these, there are some surgical arthritis treatment that involves removing of damaged cartilage tissues, shaping / replacing of bones, in some cases using artificial material, or even total removal of joint with an artificial joint. Moderate exercises strengthen the joint muscle, reduce the pressure on joint, and can be helpful in treatment of arthritis. Various types of remedies for arthritis also include hot and cold therapies for temporary relief.

There are many types of treatment for arthritis but prevention is always better than cure. Eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight, using joint protecting devices during heavy work / exercises etc can help prevent arthritis.
